NUGENT-HOPKINS SCORED A GOAL TO LEAD CANADA OVER U.S.A.

Oklahoma City Barons centerman Ryan Nugent-Hopkins continued his strong play for Team Canada at the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship in Ufa, Russia.

Early this morning, Nugent-Hopkins scored a goal in Canada’s 2-1 win over the U.S.A. in the third game for each team. Team Canada is now 3-0 in the tournament and closes out pool play against Russia tomorrow. In three games for Team Canada, Nugent-Hopkins, a 6-1, 175-pounder from Burnaby, British Columbia, has scored eight points (3-5-8). That includes a five-point effort in Canada’s 9-3 win over Germany.

Faceoff for Canada’s game against Russia is scheduled for 8 a.m. (ct) tomorrow. Coverage of the game can be seen on NHL Network in the U.S. NHL Network is airing games from pool play at the 2013 World Junior championship on a live and delayed basis in the United States. NHL Network can be seen in Oklahoma City on channel 263 / 727 (HD) on Cox Cable; channel 215 on DirecTV; channel 157 (HD) / 625 on Dish Network.

Originally the #1 overall selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Nugent-Hopkins was assigned to Oklahoma City in mid-September by the Edmonton Oilers. He has played in 19 games with Oklahoma City and scored 20 points (8-12-20).

At 19 years of age, Nugent-Hopkins is representing his country at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Under-20 tournament known as the World Junior Championship as captain for Team Canada. Nine players on the Barons roster have represented their countries in the World Junior Championships. They included Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Colten Teubert, Olivier Roy, and Curtis Hamilton for Team Canada, Magnus Paajarvi and Anton Lander for Team Sweden, Teemu Hartikainen for Team Finland and Martin Marincin for Team Slovakia.

Nugent-Hopkins’ Oklahoma City teammates close out the calendar year of 2012 by hosting the Texas Stars in the Barons annual New Year’s Eve game. Faceoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. It’s practice jersey night with the Barons. The first 2,000 adults and 1,000 kids 12-and-under receive a Barons practice jersey FREE from the Barons, Oklahoma’s Newschannel 4 and Freedom 43 TV.
