CORNET SCORES TWICE TO LEAD BARONS PAST GRIFFINS 4-1

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Barons (4-1-0-0) defeated the Grand Rapids Griffins (2-3-0-0) 4-1 Friday night at the Cox Convention Center. Barons defenseman Bryan Helmer and left wings Philippe Cornet and Teemu Hartikainen each secured multi-point nights.
Oklahoma City’s first-period scoring all occurred on the power play, lifting the Barons to seven man-advantage goals this season. The Barons struck first at 2:41 when center Gilbert Brule scored his first goal of the season. Left wing Hunter Tremblay and defenseman Bryan Helmer each received an assist to give Oklahoma City an early 1-0 lead.
Grand Rapids responded shortly after to tie the game 1-1 with a shot from right wing Chris Conner at 5:27. Defenseman Garnet Exelby and right wing Francis Pare each aided for the goal.
Left wing Philippe Cornet rounded out the first-period scoring to regain the Oklahoma City lead at 17:47. Left wing Teemu Hartikainen and Helmer each supplied assists on the power-play goal for a 2-1 score.
With only 15.8 seconds remaining in the second frame, Cornet tallied Oklahoma City’s third goal of the night to extend its lead to 3-1. Defenseman Kevin Montgomery secured the lone assist in the play. This marks the second straight game Cornet has scored twice.
Barons’ Hartikainen pushed Oklahoma City’s lead with an empty-net goal with only 41 seconds remaining in the final period. Center Josh Green supplied an assist for the 4-1 final.
Oklahoma City goalie Yann Danis (3-1-0) stopped 26 of 27 shots faced for the win. Griffins goalie Joey MacDonald (2-2-0) stopped 32 shots in the loss.
