FYTEN'S GAME-WINNER GIVES OKC 5-4 WIN OVER ROCKFORD

By George Darkow, OKC Barons on 03/01/2014

Austin Fyten netted the game-winning goal late in the third period as the Oklahoma City Barons swept the two game series with Rockford, downing the Ice Hogs 5-4 Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center.

Fyten scored the game’s decisive goal with 3:49 left in regulation, when he picked up a loose puck near the left circle and maneuvered around Rockford’s Brian Connelly before depositing a backhand shot past Rockford goalie Jason LaBarbera.

Mark Arcobello added a goal and two assists and extended his point streak to eight games, tallying at least one point in each game since rejoining the Barons Feb. 2.

Barons captain Anton Lander also had a pair of assists, giving him five in the two-game series with the Ice Hogs.

Oklahoma City got on the scoreboard first, when Arcobello sent a shot from the left circle that Matthew Ford tipped past Rockford’s starting goalie Kent Simpson for a 1-0 Barons lead at 10:26. The power play goal was Ford’s third in the two game series against the Ice Hogs, coming after a holding penalty to Rockford’s Adam Clendening at 9:32.

Early in the second period, the Barons added to their lead with another score following a bizarre unsportsmanlike conduct penalty assessed to Rockford defenseman Theo Peckham just before the period’s initial faceoff. Forty-four seconds into the power play, Arcobello received a pass from Brad Hunt inside the left circle and skidded it through Simpson’s legs while Ford screened the Rockford goalie, making it a 2-0 Barons advantage.

Rockford got on the board a short while later, when Jeremy Morin skated to open ice near the right circle and fired a wrist shot past Barons net minder Richard Bachman, cutting the Ice Hogs’ deficit to 2-1 at 2:27 of the second.

At the 2:27 mark of the second, Clendening tied the game when he picked up a loose puck in the high slot and flipped it over the outstretched glove of Bachman.

Eighteen seconds later, Oklahoma City regained its lead on a 2-on-1 rush when Arcobello skated toward the left side of the Rockford net and sent a timely pass to a charging Steve Pinizzotto, who chipped the puck past a diving Simpson for a 3-2 Barons lead. Following the goal, LaBarbera replaced Simpson in the Ice Hogs net.

Oklahoma City took a two-goal lead at 13:37 of the second when Oscar Klefbom sent a shot from behind the left circle that tipped off the stick of Curtis Hamilton and snuck between LaBarbera and the post, making the score 4-2.

Rockford answered near the end of the second period when Brad Mills fired a quick shot from just inside the right circle that eluded Bachman and found its way into the back of the Barons net, bringing the Ice Hogs within one goal at 18:33.

With Oklahoma City’s Steve Pinizzotto serving a 2:00 penalty for elbowing, Rockford’s Brandon Pirri tied the score at four when he corralled the puck near the right circle and wristed it over Bachman’s glove at the 10:33 mark.

Fyten’s goal late in the third sealed the 5-4 win for the Barons.

The Barons return to action Sunday afternoon when they take on the visiting San Antonio Rampage at 4 p.m. at the Cox Convention Center. Fans in attendance can enjoy $1 fountain drinks and $1 hot dogs, as well as join the team in a postgame skating session.
