Barons Game 5 | Home Game 3 | AHL Game 66
Oct. 23, 2012, 7 pm CDT | Cox Convention Center, Oklahoma City, OK
TONIGHT: The Barons host the Lake Erie Monsters (Colorado Avalanche) in the fourth and final meeting of the regular season between the teams. Four of the Barons’ first 5 games are against Lake Erie and the Monsters have won 2 of the first 3 matchups, including Saturday’s 5-3 decision at the Cox Center. Saturday’s contest snapped the Barons’ 2-game winning streak and leveled their record to 1-1 at home and 1-1 on the road. Lake Erie enters tonight off a 4-0 win at Texas on Sunday, the Monsters’ second road shutout of the year (the other was at Toronto).
SCHULTZ NAMED CCM/AHL PLAYER OF WEEK: Defensemen Justin Schultz is the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Oct. 21, 2012. In a pair of games last week, the rookie out of the University of Wisconsin collected 3 goals and 1 assist while registering a +6 rating. Schultz is the first Baron chosen for this honor since Colin McDonald and Jeff Deslauriers took home player of the week awards for the final 2 weeks of the 2010-11 campaign.

SCHULTZ SHINES: Justin Schultz leads the Barons in goals (4) and points (6) through the first 4 games. Schultz is the only Baron to register a point in each contest. His 4-game point streak is tied for second-best in the AHL so far behind 4 members of the Syracuse Crunch, who have played 5 games. Schultz has a goal in 3 straight, which is tied for the second-best active goal streak behind Abbotsford’s Roman Horak (4). Schultz is part of a 3-way tie for second in rookie scoring, 1 point behind Houston’s Mikael Granlund. He’s also 1 point back of the AHL lead in defensemen scoring. Schultz’s +5 rating on Friday set a club record (shared with Martin Marincin, see note below) and his 2 shorthanded goals are the most in a single game in the Barons’ 2-plus years as an AHL franchise.
MARINCIN STREAKING: Rookie defenseman Martin Marincin, a club-record +5 with Justin Schultz in Friday’s 5-2 win over San Antonio, enters this week with a season rating of +7, tying him for the league lead with Norfolk’s Nate Guenin. Marincin has points in 3 straight games.
ABNEY REASSIGNED: The Edmonton Oilers reassigned winger Cameron Abney to Stockton of the ECHL yesterday. Abney had not appeared in a game for the Barons this season. Following the move, OKC’s roster numbered 24 players: 15 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goalies.
