BARONS DOWN TEXAS TO CONTINUE STREAK
By Cassie Gage,
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Barons matched a season-best six-game win streak with a 3-1 victory over the Texas Stars Saturday evening at the Cox Convention Center. The Barons (29-11-2-3) extended their division lead to nine points and defeated the Stars (20-20-1-2) for a third time this year.
Despite not scoring in the first period, Oklahoma City put 16 shots on goal, while the Stars had nine. Dylan Yeo broke the tie early in the second period with an unassisted power play goal at 1:39. Yeo’s shot from the point trickled in past Stars goaltender Andrew Raycroft to give Oklahoma City a 1-0 lead. It was Yeo’s fifth of the year and came on the Barons’ first shot on goal of the second period.
The Barons added another quick goal at the start of the third period to extend the lead to 2-0. Ryan Keller put home his 15th goal of the year just 36 seconds into the period. Josh Green and all-star Philippe Cornet picked up the assists on the goal.
Texas broke the shutout at the 9:56 mark of the third period on a goal from Francis Wathier. Despite Texas pulling Raycroft late in the period, Hunter Tremblay added his 10th of the season with an empty netter at 19:47 to seal the 3-1 victory for Oklahoma City.
David LeNeveu turned away 22 of the 23 shots he faced and the Barons peppered Raycroft with 44 shots on the night.
Oklahoma City takes a few days off for the American Hockey League All-Star Game Monday in Atlantic City, N.J. Cornet and defenseman Alex Plante were named starters for the game and will be joined by Keller and goaltender Yann Danis. Barons head coach Todd Nelson will serve as the Western Conference head coach.
The Barons continue the current four-game homestand on Thursday, Feb. 2 against the San Antonio Rampage at 7 p.m. CT.
