RAMPAGE SLIP BY BARONS IN SHOOTOUT, 2-1
By Jim Byers,
San Antonio's Jared Gomes shoveled home a tying goal with 12.9 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and eventually a shootout in the Rampage's 2-1 win over the Oklahoma City Barons on Saturday at Cedar Park Center in Cedar Park, Texas.
The Barons conclude a two-game pre-season with an overtime loss (to Texas on Friday) and a shootout loss, in each game never trailing during actual playing time.
Ryan Martindale scored Oklahoma City's goal on a breakaway at 10:42 of the second period on assists from Linus Omark and Brad Hunt.
That 1-0 lead held until San Antonio pulled the goalie with 1:34 remaining in favor of an extra attacker and scored in the final seconds after a goal-mouth scramble to tie the game 1-1.
After a scoreless overtime, Gomes potted the only goal of the shootout, beating Ty Rimmer on the stick side in the third round. Joel Broda, Martindale, Omark (who hit the post), Anton Lander and Martin Gernat had unsuccessful shootout tries against Dov Grumet-Morris, who made 22 saves in the win. Richard Bachman started in net for Oklahoma City and made 10 saves. Rimmer stopped 18 of 19 shots.
The Barons open the regular season on Friday at 7 pm CDT against Charlotte at the Cox Center in the first of back-to-back home contests.
