WOLVES BLANK BARONS, 3-0

The Oklahoma City Barons dropped a 3-0 decision to the Chicago Wolves Saturday evening at the Cox Convention Center. Oklahoma City (34-24-2-8) led in shots on goal at the end of the game, 31-25, but was unable to solve Chicago starting netminder Matt Climie.
Chicago wasted no time in challenging Oklahoma City starting goaltender Niko Hovinen. Danny Groulx scored his sixth of the season just 1:21 into the game to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
Despite the Barons getting chances on Climie, the Wolves extended the lead to 2-0 as Jim Vandermeer was credited with jamming the puck past Hovinen at 11:31. Chicago held the shots lead 13-11 at the end of the first.
Oklahoma City took the shots lead in the second period, holding a 23-18 advantage after 40 minutes of play. The Barons out-shot the Wolves 12-5 in the period.
Hovinen made a quality save on Anton Rodin to keep Chicago off the board early in the second. The Barons then had chances Darcy Hordichuk, Antti Tyrvainen and Tanner House all tried to get the puck past Climie but the netminder turned away the shots.
Oklahoma City got its first chance on the power play at 8:28 of the second as Guillaume Desbiens was sent to the box for high-sticking Hordichuk near the crease. The Barons were unable to capitalize with the man advantage but continued to pressure Climie. Nathan Deck had a point shot gloved by Climie and Chris VandeVelde followed with followed with another chance.
Teemu Hartikainen hit the post just before the Barons went back on the power play as Desbiens went to the box for cross-checking at 14:39. Hartikainen found Jonathan Cheechoo, who missed a one-timer with the advantage and then Hartikainen was handcuffed on a rebound attempt and couldn’t get the shot off.
The Barons continued to hold the shots lead in the third period, but Chicago added a shorthanded empty-net goal at 18:05 by Desbiens to secure the 3-0 win.
The Barons and Wolves faceoff Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. CT. Sunday afternoon game’s is Family Fun Day with the Barons. Fans can get $1 hot dogs and regular sized soft drinks from 3-5 p.m. and fans can skate with the team on the Cox Convention Center ice following the game for free.
